Any man who makes it his business to dress well should likewise make it his business to know if his expensive investment of made to measure suits are making the cut in terms of quality work and durability.

After all, it is not merely the act of wearing men’s suits that maketh a man, but the quality and state of his closet wardrobe. A well-made suit that suits the wearer’s body to a tee can drastically change the image and personality of man not only in the way people perceive him, but more importantly, in how the wearer sees and feels about himself.

So there are basically four factors to consider in judging the suit’s quality: fabric and stitching, design and style, button, and durability.

Fabric and Stitching of Made to Measure Suits

Definitely, the type of fabric threading used in one’s custom made suit is a huge influencing factor in determining the quality of the suit. The use of a natural fiber fabric is the hallmark of a good suit. This is primarily because the shape and color last longer than any other synthetic materials.

Aside from the suiting fabric threads, the quality of work stitching is a critical factor. Weaving should be tight, even and uniform, with no loose or undone threads. Stitches must be secure and straight and at least 8 to 12 stitches per inch on made to measure suits.

Patterns must line up especially at the shoulder joints, collar and pockets. Last but not the least, hemmed bottoms should hang straight and not curl or wrinkle.

Design and Style

Good styling and designing are certainly part and parcel of what takes a suit from that level of mediocrity to elegance. An important part of this is the symmetry. Both sides of the suit, left sleeves and right sleeves or pant legs etc., should be perfectly aligned in shape, size and positioning.

After all, this is a made to measure suit and not just any other ready-to-wear men’s suit picked out on sale somewhere.

Buttons and Zippers

What good a fine fabric would do in a custom suit if the buttons were cheap-looking and of low quality?

This is a small area that is often overlooked by the buyer, but easily noticeable to observers, especially to those who are truly connoisseurs of men’s suits. Another thing to check is the distance of each buttons on the suit jacket. They should be in equal length, straight and tightly sewn using good quality thread. Check also the quality of the zippers by running it up and down and ascertain that it runs smoothly and do not snag.

All of these factors and some more must also tie up in the end to assure the man that his costly made to measure suits will keep him looking elegant and well-polished for many years. And that he has invested wisely.
